Thank you for sharing my friend CW5 Jack Cardwell. my paternal grandfather was a British Army lance corporal who served at Gallipoli, Turkey in 1915 and the in the trench warfare of France and Belgium until he was wounded.
He didn't speak about his wartime experiences and I met him once before he died as we spend some time with him when i was very young. The enlisted records from WWI were largely destroyed during the Battle of Britain.
His brother who served with him in Europe was killed along with his wife when their house was destroyed by a German bomb in 1944.
My family discouraged me from pursuing a military career based on their experiences of WWI and WWII in England.

I scanned through the article and it has a few salient points.

All great and cataclysmic wars include new weaponry on large scales.
The Great War introduced
1. massive submarine activity against enemy shipping including noncombatants
2. machine gun battalions which devastated opposing forces marching initially in traditional form.
3. Aerial observation via biplanes
4. Air combat capabilities including hand dropped bombs and aircraft fighting other aircraft . Major technical improvement was machine guns that fired at intervals designed to ensure they could fire through the engine blades of the propeller. That allowed pilots or gunner to engage and aim straight on.
5. Large scale use of debilitating and lethal gas.
6. The advantage of interior lines of communication for the German and Austro Hungarian and Ottoman Turks provided an advantage especially after the Russian Revolution of 1917 took Russia out of the Entente.

When stationed in Turkey we made several trips to Gallipoli and the Dardanelles and walked all the military sites. Most of the information was about the victorious Turkish actions, but willing to bet I walked some of the same areas that your grandfather did. What I remember the most are the HUGE chains that were used to stretch across the Dardanelles to block ships from getting through.

Thank you my friend Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen for letting me know that while you were stationed in Turkey you made several trips to Gallipoli and the Dardanelles and walked all the military sites. I certainly expect you did walk through areas my grandfather did over 100 years ago.
As you probably know the "the HUGE chains that were used to stretch across the Dardanelles to block ships from getting through" date back to 1912 when Italy and Turkey fought. [Italian-Turkish War, September 29, 1911, to October 18, 1912]
"To keep the Italians from penetrating further, perhaps even to Constantinople itself, the Turks closed the straits -- to all shipping, not just naval forces -- with huge steel chains stretched across the water, complemented by minefields, torpedo boats, and mobile artillery positioned on shore."
