During my Basic @ FT Knox, the only time weapons came out of the arms room was for BRM week. Since then, I believe the Army has returned to embedding Soldiers and their rifles throughout training. Imagine that, train like you fight...you have to keep up with them and keep them serviceable in the combat zone 24/7.

1SG (Join to see) Our weapons were with us 24/7 through basic and ITR in '68,1SG. No live rounds though,except rifle range and guard duty at certain locations.

SSgt Terry P. - We only had our when we checked them out of the armory, and that was in '79 @ MCRD San Diego.

Stanley Kubrick's intent with of Full Metal Jacket was to highlight the dehumanization of normal people during training and combat. I never noticed how dark the movie was until after I had been in for a few years. Now I find it kind of sad.
