Let me put this out there. My kids are currently enrolled in a private school. The schools in my area in San Antonio are not bad, but our decision was based on ensuring they are challenged, given a faith based education, and that they retain the traditional American values. Public schools are way too high strung about everything and I simply do not want to deal with it. Still, putting my kids through a private school costs a significant amount of money to which we have had to facilitate. We look at it as an investment in their future (which can affect ours as well by the way).

When Dems tell me that there should not be school choice, vouchers, etc, I too have to scratch my head and wonder why they would want to prevent such a thing. After all, I know of two state-level congressmen (Democrats) who've enrolled their kids in the same school. Not only have they done this, they also have to drive a significant distance out of their way to get their kids to a school which is not even close to their district. Don't get me wrong, these Congressmen are friends and I am able to overlook the fact we disagree politically, but I can't help but think in a way they are also hypocrites. Democrats tend to demand "fairness" and "equality" for all and yet they still demand that we place a large amount of our taxes into the public school system vs building a system which facilitates public schools as well as a choice system where I can get a tax credit on my property taxes for choosing a private school. The point in this country is to ensure that all our children are educated to a specific level to become more productive citizens to this country. If we were to implement a credit and challenge the public schools to do better, our kids would only stand to benefit from this competition.

In the end, for me I am happy with my choice, but the only reason my kids get this opportunity is because I can afford it. This is not the case for so many Americans. I have no problem seeing this country level the playing field by providing more opportunities to all Americans to raise the level of education in this country by institutionalizing more competition between public and private schools. Instead Democrats fight this and focus on smaller issues like preventing prayer and the pledge, opinionated teaching, and inserting their own view of history. No thanks. I also look to the same democrats who push for public education and hinder the access to private when their own kids are enrolled in private schools. What example are they setting here. Finally, when I see the competent teachers leaving the public school system to both teach and enroll their own kids in private schools, I listen to the nasty things they have to say about public schools.

The Dems can't and won't stop school choice because this would affect them as well. Their goal, in my opinion, could only be that they want it for only those who can afford to have the access (i.e. class warfare rears it's head again).

The problem for Democrats is that while they claim to be the party of the poor, they also are the party of the unions. This is one of those areas where different Democrat constituencies conflict -- and unfortunately for poor people and their young students, unions can offer Democrats more money and more votes.

I was stationed in California in the 80's and went to school there in the early 90's. I remember during that time there was a school choice/voucher proposal on the ballot. Some Teachers Union official said, "We will start looking after the interests of students when they start paying union dues."

Many studies suggest that Democrats that promote public schools enroll their own children in private schools or academies. A prime example are the President and Mrs. Obama who enrolled their own kids in the Sidwell Friends Academy instead of a public school. Their reasoning was they valued education and wanted the best for their children so they chose a private school over a public school. Joe Biden's grandson attended the same school. So by doing so they believed the private schools provide a better education than the public schools did. Hypocritical yes, but an honest admission! So how can the Democrats stop school choice when they exercise it themselves with their own children?

"So how can the Democrats stop school choice when they exercise it themselves with their own children?" Because they're the party of Do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do.

I think - being extreeeeeeeeemly intelligent about it - we can write it off to simple security. You want your kids going to public school while you're president? I think not.
