I still have yet to purchase, is it worth it compared to Doom 3?

SrA Edward Vong Most definitely. In my opinion, the new Doom wipes the floor with Doom 3. My experience has been mainly with the single player side. It brings back the fast paced action of the original Doom and Doom 2 and adds some modern mechanics. You are back to being just the "Doom Guy", attitude and all. I am not a big fan of multi-player, but I did try some of the multi-player and felt like I was playing Halo instead of Doom. Did not enjoy it at all. I highly recommend it for the single-player only,

Angry Joe did a very good review of Doom:

I'll definitely pick it up then. I think all games don't really need a multiplayer, they just put it there in case the multiplayer somehow takes off, but most shooters are designed single player with multiplayer availability.

SrA Edward Vong - I wholeheartedly agree. Doom was the first time I tried multiplayer in a long time. The original Star Wars Battlefront was the last time I played multiplayer. Not a big fan of the "trash talk", and I use that term loosely, that happens in multiplayer. Single-Player games are my bread and butter.

Agreed. The only multiplayer I really play now, are couch co-op (or other co-op games), and Super Smash Bros. (Wii U). I grew tired of multiplayer shooters after Battlefield 3.
