One would think that the Navy would have found an answer by now.

If the Navy really wanted this munition, it would have funded further R&D to make it work. It appears that they really don't want it

Easy fix as I see it. No more promotions to Admiral or CPON till the problem is fixed. No go ahead and take your time folks. Or give the Marines the old battleships independent of Navy inteference.

Build a few cruisers equippedwith 6 or 8" guns at least 8 big guns as well as modern guided missiles. THese ships to be part of a battle group built around a LHA LHD specifically for support of the Marines. Remember LHA and LHD can carry V/STOL aircraft for more reachout and touch.
Yes the Iowa Class battleships would be great for support of the Marines....think Beirut Airport receiving gunfire from the hills, a few rounds later every vertical pole had a white rag on it some stained with brown. THe Iowas were great in their day.

I am thinking a 6" gun light cruiser giving the Marines the equivalent of their 155mm artillery just off of the beach,
