Such Good Advice! I wish I took this instruction at the beginning of my career. No one taught me anything when I was 17, 18, and 19 years old. Squats and circuits are the best advice!!!!
Cross Country ran at Fort Bragg to increase strength in my knees and legs...

The why about the waistband...It helps redistribute the weight to your hips and lower body so the impact is not only on your shoulder harness and traps...

So, in addition, you need to have a ruck properly fitted to your frame. A large ruck on a small person will not allow the back support and waist band to do thier job. Fit the frame to your size body correctly. Don't just choose the latge frame because thats what will accomodate what you want to put in it if it does not fit your body.

Strengthen your back, neck, legs and hip flexors first! This impact of all that weight and gravity should not be the burden of your bones and disks. Make certain your muscle mass can support the weight you are carrying otherwise your disks, joints, feet and spine take the brunt of it. Just because you can put it on and stand up does not mean you are ready. Trust the woman who has Titanium plate six screws and four pins in her neck and back. Who can hardly walk in the morning and can not step on her feet from running in Corcoran Jump boots when I was young and uninformed. Years of jumping, rucking and landing hard took their toll and stress fractured my feet, ankles, and crushed my spine, my disks and fractured my vertebrea. "No Pain, No Gain" right? WRONG! I was lucky to not be paralyzed after my stint in Afghanistan, SAPI Plates, Oversized Kevlar, an unfortunate MRAP accident, a vest not manufactured or fitted correctly made it worse. Do resistance exrcises first before you just go and don a 75 pound vest loaded for bear and ruck thats even heavier. Trust me when I say, you want to enjoy your retirement right?

I thought I needed to run every day for years to keep up my endurance and cardio, 5'9. 158 pounds (119 when I commissioned) and 4-7 miles day. I can not run one step now. Lasting injuries to my hips, knees, neck, back and feet, Two kinds of arthritis, leace me few outdoor activities I can really enjoy.

I am not saying don't do it, I am sayimng do it the right way and learn from others mistakes. Getting injured while training does not make you cool or a hero.
