That doesn't seem very surprising to me PO1 William "Chip" Nagel that rural patients would be more likely to succumb to cancer.
For one thing many people who live in rural areas may shun medical treatment and prefer to die on their own terms.

I agree. And even if many rural people do want to seek medical treatment it is not available, difficult to get, not easy to afford and sometimes requires lengthy delays as the limited number of hospitals and doctors are overbooked with other patients. Hopefully either a cure for most cancers or easier and less demanding, less costly treatments are within sight.

There is also the issue that many people don't know the signs of early stages of some cancers which could lead to catching the disease early enough to get treatment in time and survive. More education regarding early signs of cancer is needed in rural areas as well.
