Upgrading an existing aircraft to be a next generation aircraft not a concept we'll see in the US, but does it make sense? Or are they bluffing with what we would call a new mod?

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I feel they are bluffing. They don't want to look horribly behind in a very public world. They are grasping at their world power status in order to maintain a semblance of it (wow, that was quite a few big & sophisticated words I used. I better take a nap).

"What we're doing" is tantamount to the Russians but not for the reasons we feel. They are selling their weapons. Right now, most of their navy is on the auction block. The AK-47 family is a staple of armies world wide. Where the Russians have kind of tailed off in, is aerial sales. If they could sell planes capable of besting or beating the latest American store shelf items, then they'd be happy campers. The West German's swallowed the entire East German air force and while Thatcher and other German watchers feared the instant trippling of Germany's military might, the Migs and SU's were liberally shared amongst the USA, UK, etc and the results were not that stellar. Russia has not recovered from that embarassment.

The only thing they've been able to do, is put a fast plane to sea. It can't carry much, but damn is it fast. Its only a matter of time. If they can field a jet that can fly alongside the F-15/F-16, in capability and payload, they'll be a seller in next to no time. Go back in time to France, 1967. They were the top arms seller in the world. Then, slowly they lost their edge. Russia is getting that way. They have to sell their gear to pay bills but who wants to buy obscelete gear? So they're having to revitalize their industry.

PO3 Donald Murphy agreed. They were a step behind before the fall. Since the fall, they've fallen 2 or 3 steps further. Their new birds, honestly, look like their old birds w/ new paint on them.

Capt Dwayne Conyers yeah, but China's new birds aren't looking too great. They're large & bulky. Won't make good fighters. They are, currently, more focused on sea, rather than air.

India has tall orders too. India has got probably half of the Russian Navy in its shopping cart. They're waiting to see how Russian repairs to the Chinese-bought carrier works out.
