Doesn't it seem like NationalInterest is going through Norman Polmar's Ships and Aircraft, and finding things to post? Not really much intellectual thought in the articles. No real founding in reality that the ships they have been pulling up the last week all have one fatal flaw, they are old and outdated. Not counting the fact the amount of money required to get them up to speed is prohibitive to full scale ops... My 2 cents. Have a great weekend!

Whats crazy is that they had a "novel" dual-system propulsion unit with nuclear and conventional power sharing the same reduction gears, steam rooms, etc. Problem is, you couldn't run them both at the same time. "Well duh - why would you want to?" Honest question, but the truth is that non-nuclear stuff has to be run in every so many hours to maintain lubrication, etc. So they'd be showing off - wacking out 35 knots on nuclear power, and then they'd SCRAM the reactor to simulate a power plant malfunction and then quickly switch to conventional power.

CRUNCH!

You could hear metal hitting the deck, shuddering, all the sounds a fully functioning warship doesn't want to hear. Then, they'd try to go back to nuclear and the grinding would make a louder crunchier noise. Crazy ass Russians. And their radar was caustic. You couldn't be topside when it was on or it would sterilize you. Kirov was okay but Frunze was the yard queen. Don't know what happened to the third one but she was never officially accepted into the fleet. Peter The Great I believe was nuke only.

They were junk when they were brand new. We blew sunshine up their butts tho to get them to continue to build them. They knocked out two and had two underway before they realized we were joking.
