Thank you, my friend PO1 William "Chip" Nagel for posting the status update from Libya. Embattled states abhor a vacuum. No surprise that Russia is using unconventional assets to influence Libya.
No surprise the benighted New York times is labeling these Russian snipers as mercenaries :-)
These are unconventional Russian assets who are most likely on specified missions.
Unsurprisingly, the "Russians have intervened on behalf of the militia leader Khalifa Hifter, who is based in eastern Libya and is also backed by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and, at times, France."

There are four poles in the ongoing Libya conflict. It has been a smaller and ignored cousin of Syria's war since actually before Syria's civil war started. It is a clear threat to regional stability, yet for some reason, the US is largely ignoring it.
Libya will never approach Syria for bloodshed. But I think that it's legacy might have a longer shadow of consequences.
