NICARAGUA: FORMER PRESIDENT ORTEGA DENOUNCES ELECTION RESULT (2)

Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on February 14, 1989 during a meeting of the presidents of Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and El Salvador, the leftist Sandinista government of Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega agreed to free a number of political prisoners and hold free elections within a year; in return, Honduras promised to close bases being used by anti-Sandinista rebels.
Thankfully within a year, elections in Nicaragua resulted in the defeat of the Sandinistas, removing what officials during the administration of President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) referred to as a “beachhead of communism” in the Western Hemisphere.
Sadly in In the 2006 Nicaraguan general election, former FSLN President Daniel Ortega was re-elected President of Nicaragua with 38.7% of the vote compared to 29% for his leading rival, bringing in the country's second Sandinista government after 16 years of the opposition winning elections.
"Former Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega has denounced the results of the country's October 20th elections after conservative Arnoldo Aleman was confirmed the official winner on Friday.
The announcement followed the elections by nearly three weeks after a reexamination of the vote made following claims of irregularities lodged by Ortega's Sandinista National Liberation Front.
The final count gave Aleman 51 percent of the vote against Ortega's 37-point-7 percent.
Addressing a mass rally of supporters in Managua's Revolutionary Plaza, the leader of the left-wing Sandinista National Liberation Front refused to accept defeat.
He declared the results "fraudulent" and "an act of violence against the Nicaraguan people."
Ortega criticised Nicaragua's Catholic Church, claiming a conspiracy against the Sandinistas during the three weeks which followed the elections.
