Recent actions of Saudi King Salman have moved to bolster the agenda of Saudi Arabia and it's standing in the Middle East. Instead of standing behind the U.S. allowing the U.S. to take the brunt of the responsibility for actions done to assist and protect Saudi Arabia they are now moving to show themselves as prominent leaders in the region.
They want to be seen as leaders for the Arab nations and as defenders of their brand of Islam.
This is not just about a change in foreign policy it is also a change in how they want to be perceived by the rest of the Arab nations and it has a cultural element to it.
How the U.S. reacts to this more robust stance by Saudi Arabia will determine our future standing in the region.

If this is true, it's great news. It means Saudi Arabia is finally starting to take responsibility for what's going on in their region of the world, and (hopefully) less US lives will be lost in the process!
