I am the child of coal miners for God only knows how many generations. My father escaped that life as a prize fighter and I will be forever grateful that he did. Still, I feel a connection to miners and always look whenever there's news of a coal mine disaster. I feel the same relief when miners emerge from their tombs safe and sound, and grieve when they don't. Now here's a different kind of tragedy, one that has been continuing for years and decades and may continue for centuries to come.
