Once upon a time you couldn't drive across America more than fifty miles without hearing people speak with a different accent. Today you have to cross regions to discern the differences. Mass migration as well as the influence of entertainment media, especially TV have homoginized our speech. In 1966 when I enlisted, I shared a tent (we overflowed the available barracks) at the reception center with four recruits from WVa and one from MA. I had to interpret for them.

I've heard both, and it is a blast to listen to them.
