See Vintage Pictures of Syria's Ancient History

As a result of the Syrian Civil War, the loss of Syria's most treasured history spurs a sense of urgency in conservationists to preserve remains of the country’s cultural heritage—even if it's just a blueprint—to someday restore centuries-old, war-damaged sites. Through an initiative called 'Curious Travellers', digital surveyors from French startup Iconem are working with in-country archaeologists to build 3D maps, and asking tourists worldwide with pictures of Syrian historic sites to build an online database that will assist future reconstruction. Additionally, a UK-academic initiative is surveying satellites and aerial photographies to document damage.
