POTUS' plan to close Gitmo means the Republican hold on the nominee to be the next Army secretary will not end. Kansas Senator Pat Roberts has placed a hold on Fanning as nominee for the secretary of the Army to prevent the executive action being used to close Guantanamo Bay and transfer detainees to the United States. Senator Roberts wants to ensure that no detainees are housed in Leavenworth, KS.. He and other members believe it is too dangerous to bring the detainees designated as being most dangerous to locations inside the U.S..
White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters, "There are three groups of detainees: Those cleared for transfer to third countries; those who can be prosecuted; and a group that is deemed too dangerous to transfer and cannot be effectively prosecuted. He said it's this third group that the administration is considering transferring to places in the United States where they could be securely held."
In response to this Senator Roberts said, "Congress has consistently stopped Obama by law from moving a single detainee to the U.S., and this would be an egregious overstep by the administration ignoring the will of the American people to accomplish the president's legacy goals."
The battle between Congress and POTUS will continue with efforts from both sides to stop the other from accomplishing it's goals.
