The Missouri Compromise and the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act were part of the balancing act to keep both the slave and the free states in the union TSgt Joe C.
In hindsight this offends many; but that is one of the challenging aspects of history. Modern sensibilities are modern and tend to be unique in the history of the world.
