SGT John " Mac " McConnell He has the best lines in this whole movie.
Sir, Custer was a pussy, you aint.
My favorite moment in the whole movie is after they rescue the pinned down Sergeant Savage, he looks at the kid, and says "Now that's a nice day Sergeant Savage." After being completely nasty to the kid every time he tried to say good morning while they were stateside. It shows that he genuinely cares about the men under his command. Just a beautiful moment during the devastation of battle.

A good friend of mine was stationed at Fort Benning during the filming of "We Were Soldiers", and was an extra during the scene when the Battalion was in formation at Doughboy Stadium. He got to interact with Sam numerous times off camera and said he was a really cool dude. Funny thing was Sam would get into character between scenes and walk through the ranks, "chewing out" actors and even the Soldier extras for minor infractions, in particular a 2nd Lt. who had dip in his mouth in formation. He got his picture taken with him and Sam signed it. He said Mel Gibson was an asshole and didn't talk to any of the Soldiers, just chained smoked cigarettes every second the camera wasn't rolling.

Great actor, I love all the parts that he has played. Especially as a cowboy.
