Actually when I started my career in the Air Force it was as an Air Policeman with the 351st Combat Defense Squadron, (SAC) at Whiteman AFB, MO with the AFSC (Air Force Specialty code of 771, Air Police. The name was later changed to Security Police which actually We were not too thrilled about but they didn't ask us. that was now 811 We were now the 351st Security Police Squadron. When working Desk Sergeant at a later point I would not answer the phone Security Police but said "Base Police" instead. From Whiteman AFB I went to 12th SPS, Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam and the 366th SPS, Da Nang Vietnam. Other assignments included Hanscom AFB,MA, Lowry AFB, CO and Hickham AFB, HI. All of My 22 years (with one 8 year break in service ) in a USAF uniform were spent in the Air Police, Security Police and ending with another return to Hanscom AFB, MA and retiring from the USAF. That last assignment was with the 66th Security Forces Squadron at Hanscom. My career was all as a "Sky Cop" although I had also been a First Sergeant but in a Security Police unit. I had held many of the positions both in Security but mostly in Law Enforcement, Desk Sergeant Patrol Supervisor, Flight Chief even time at SPI, Security Police Investigations. up into the upper levels as Operations Supt. Security Police Supt. (later called SP Manager)
I'm still in touch with people I had served with. In addition I also retired from a civilian Police Department and even worked an Armed Federal contract after that retirement with on of My old SP units the 66th Security Forces Squadron at Hanscom AFB, MA . I had been there with the 3245th SPS in 1969-70 after returning from Vietnam, went again in 1981 then again to work the civilian contract with 66th SFS as a Lieutenant in the civilian side.
The picture provide here in Me as a Staff Sergeant back in 1973 with the 15th Security Police Squadron, Hickham AFB, HI We had recently changed from the 1505 tan uniforms to the new two tone blue, (Lt blue shirt, and dark AF blue pants) for on duty use. I at last got to use a left handed border patrol type holster, (shown here) on the old swivel holsters they were only right handed type. No longer did We have the black Sam Browne gear with the leather cross strap either.
