Safety is a key concern. My daughter is now crawling and I need to buy a few more quick access lock boxes.

There are some intersting views in either direction as to the right way to go about teaching kids about guns, whether to wait until they are old enough to make good decisionsand actually shoot, or whether to take the forbidden fruit out of it by making it something that can be seen and touched and handled in a safe manner whenever they want upon request with supervision once they can recite and understand safety rules.

Capt Richard I P. Hey Skipper, I forgot to add, that I had this "gun" talk, with my spouse, who is not anti-guns, just not that interested in them. She is VERY interested in making sure our son, does not have access any of my guns. "If my son is killed by one of your guns, I would NEVER forgive you." To which I replied, "don't worry, I would live in the hell of my own making (whenever I got out of jail for the negligent death of my son) if I was that stupid or careless or negligent."

So I showed my wife, how I stored the only "loaded" gun I keep bullets in (condition 3) in our house, and I made sure she knew the digital combination, and we have agreed to have the "talk" again when our son gets older and more sophisticated.

I am open to removing all my guns from my home, a kind of radical solution for a Pro-2A Marine veteran and hunter, and licensed CCW holder/Uniformed carry armed security officer with a gun card (I got to be one of the few people with a license to practice law and to carry a pistol as a uniformed security officer in California) who has owned and been around guns since I was 18. But I love my son, more than I like or love (or more correctly stated, "appreciate the value of owning quality firearms") guns.

I will cross that bridge when my son and I come to it. Incidentally, because of my son, I have chosen not to have a revolver as my home defense weapon. I have high regard for GP-100s, S/W 686s, and 38 revolvers, being the first type of guns I learned on, and owned, and became proficient with, other than the M-16A1 during my college Marine OCS/PLC days. But revolvers seem to me to very dangerous to kids, because there is usually no manual safety like there is on many semi-autos, plus you can safely carry a semi-auto in condition 3 Magazine loaded, but no bullet in the chamber. In fact there is an Israeli IDF training manual of arms for semi-autos, where you are cycling the slide to load and cock the pistol as you draw the pistol (which is holstered in condition 3). Takes two hands and some training, but I am pretty sure this way of carrying your self-defense pistol has cut down on Accidental Discharges.

OK.....as a person, I understand that in situations, safety is a key factor. I'm not anti-gun and I know that in some circumstances, having a weapon can prove to be a life-saver.

As a mother (on the other hand), Why would you be playing/cleaning/farting around with a semi-auto weapon in front of a toddler? A smart person wouldn't have a round in the chamber, having a magazine in the weapon or even better....HAVE IT OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE. If there was a threat toward the family then at that case I understand that safety is paramount. From what I gather from the article, there was no threat to the family or to the child. So why have it out? To clean it? Fine. Clean it but not out in the open of a 4 year old child!

Seems like the guy just doesn't need to own any weapon if he can't figure out if the weapon is loaded and decided to "play" around with it.

It's such a shame and it's so sad to see someone hurt from someone's stupidity, especially a child.
I fear for the future.

The father was like many people who own guns and probably has not been properly trained in the safe handling of guns, and the habits you need to master when you own guns, like clearing a weapon in a safe gun drill, as the very first thing you do , when you pick up a gun. That was the reason for my proposal of having the local police give gun safety classes on the laws and the safe storage and handling of weapons.

I don't think people like Hillary Clinton or other anti-gun liberals would support my proposal. They have an irrational hatred of guns and just want them limited or banned. That probably will not happen given the country's divide. But we could educate poor people and people of moderate means who live in crime infested neighborhoods and have enough money to buy and keep a firearm, but do not have the money to pay for quality firearms training.

That father will have to live with his stupidity for the rest of his life, as will the mother.

The safety classes is a great idea! In my opinion, there should be an intelligence test along with it to show they can be competent with weapons. I've seen so many different stories about this that it scares me that Joe Schmo can get a permit, get a gun yet never fired one in their life.
Education needs to be included along with safety. Without that, we are doomed.

I want a legitimate answer from a anti-gun person as to why weapons shouldn't be considered. I don't want the everyday answer of "oh, they kill" or "they are dangerous." Think about this: our hands can be used as deadly weapons. Are you going to be anti-hand and cut them off? Not trying to be funny but you see my point.

If there was more education on the fact of gun use (just within the civilian world) I bet there would be less gun-related issues with human error. The anti-gun supports can be ignorant to the fact that they have never held a weapon and also have no general knowledge. There maybe also people who have experienced trauma in their life too....but still, knowledge should be taught about this. Maybe I'm asking for too much but it's somewhere to start.

As many other SM and Vets learned via boot camp and their time in service, have a knowledge to make sure a weapon is clear and safe and that it's in a condition to show that the chamber is empty and of any rounds and magazines were removed.
