Whatever past protocol has been the norm should apply. Who the candidate is should not matter.

MCPO Roger Collins Make no mistake, I don't care who the POTUS is, I don't want them screwing up my daily life just because they decided to get yogurt. This is the first time in my life that the President has had a residence near where I live, literally less than two miles from my home.
I do not know what the past procedure has been, but I stand by my feeling that Presidential Protection costs From Secret Service Agents, to fuel costs, to Local Law Enforcement should be paid for by the Federal Government. Motorcade costs should not be the burden of Local authorities. Further, it could cause local authorities to simply decline to assist. If I was a sheriff, or chief of police, and knew my annual budget was going to be hosed by overtime costs, I would not be inclined to have my officers involved.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - While I can sympathize with your concern, it would be no different from a celebrity event there for entertainment. I live in extreme flyover country and we couldn't support any of these types of activities.

They usually get paid to protect the POTUS, however in Trumps case you can probably get enough cops to volunteer to protect him for free.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell I doubt that, overtime is where they make their bonuses. Whether it be working the County Fair, Church Parking, or Presidential Motorcade, they (rightfully so) want their overtime. It is not a matter of them being paid, it is a matter of who is footing the bill for them being paid. Your comment does make me wonder though, is this a volunteer detail, a voluntold detail, or is it something where only certain deputies are offered the opportunity. I know a few years ago, When President Obama was down here, some jackass ran into a motorcycle officer who was part of the Presidential Motorcade, killing the officer.

Agreed, but Trump is very popular among police. He is the one guy who could get a volunteer force together.

SFC George Smith I don't think Secret Service has traffic units, though maybe they should just for the Presidential Motorcade. I definitely think that the protection of the President should fall to federal funding, not state, and certainly not local.
My son and I went to pick up lunch for my family and in a three block area we saw a dozen or so Sheriff vehicles just waiting to pull out and block the intersections. The one vehicle we passed close by, the deputy looked bored out of his skull.
On a side note, Donald Trump is used to everyone around him catering to his every whim. If he wants to go from Palm Beach to New York, he gets on his plane and flies away. Now that he is the President Elect, he cannot do that. It has to be planned in advance, and cleared through the Secret Service. I wonder how long Donald will be able to accept the limitations placed upon him by the need for Presidential protection.
