PO1 William "Chip" Nagel you talk about blood draws. I added Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen here because in my military anesthesia practice a code blue/red (depending on the facility) laboratory would come over the PA. If I was not tied up in an anesthetic I was a responder. Virtually all of these calls were a patient had passed out getting blood drawn. The reason I added Jack to the discussion was that an inordinate number of theses individuals were officers wearing a flight suit.

In many cases waiting 30 minutes for numbing cream to work may be counter productive. Now the parent has to entertain the child an extra 30 minutes.
Distraction techniques can work, smaller gauge needles hurt less. Thankfully I never had to stick many children in my practice. In many cases I could breathe them down with an anesthetic gas before having to start an IV.
Now, if they could make numbing gel/cream that took 5 minutes, that would be great.
Unfortunately, the small stick may not be the total culprit; many injections themselves cause pain
This is a topic that is a difficult one, especially for those of us in the business.
