The JMR-TD and FVL programmes are part of a wider effort by the US Army to revamp its aviation capabilities, as it looks to replace the 1970s-era technology of its current helicopters and to recapitalise hardware worn out by years of continuous use in some of the world's harshest environments.
Major efforts comprise consolidating helicopter fleets from seven down to four main types (the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, Boeing CH-47 Chinook, Boeing AH-64 Apache, and Airbus UH-72 Lakota); resetting and sustaining equipment used in conflict (UH-60A to L conversions, UH-72 overhaul, and depot engine overhaul); modernisation and modification (incremental upgrades of platforms with new survivability and communications equipment); new systems (adding mobility, survivability, and lethality capabilities across the helicopter fleets); and developing tomorrow's science and technology (the Improved Turbine Engine Program, the Common Infrared Countermeasures, JMR-TD/FVL, and the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile [JAGM]).
