While I understand that anyone controlling ICANN is not in control of the internet and I wont get into the long deep conspiracy theory on how it potentially could lol. I will pose a few thoughts.
Why should or would America give up any control to other Nations of anything?
I know a women that remarried a few years after her Husband passed away. The man she married has slowly crushed her... and she allowed it. It started small, you shouldn't drive because .... You shouldn't go out with out me because, now she has been programed to not talk to people, he answers her questions, he tells her what and when to eat, when to go to bed. He has sold or given her children's legacy from their father away. He has depleted her bank account and squandered her widows benefits. ect ect.
I see America being that women, slowly it keeps giving up its freedoms, its authority, its birth right... because... reasons.... It keeps doing it and says well its only a small thing what does it matter...
On the matter of the UN... I think they should be shown the door. We have Countries with the worst track record for human rights violations / abuse of women / in charge of the committees on human rights and women. This isn't a sign? They have yet to accomplish anything in the middle east and we are funding them. WHY? Why keep them around. Sure it was a grand idea in its day but to be honest it really isn't worth it any more.

Well even a broke clock is rite twice a day. I personally really dislike the UN, they are an example of a really cool idea in theory, gone absolutely amuck. This came up in conversation the other day and I had no idea it was the UN taking responsibility for the internet. So much for speech.

SMSgt Jesse Ohlsson - That's good if they don't they'd find a way to jack it up. Is ICANN that road from Canada to Alaska? Boy if the UN gets hold of that baby we're really screwed.

CSM Richard StCyr - The Internet is a system of switches by which message packets are transmitted from source to source or source to requester. Assigned numbers are attached to each data packet so that switches can direct the traffic properly. Names are used by you and me in lieu of numbers (they're easier to remember) and the switches have data tables of names and numbers so that the names can be interpreted as numbers that the switches use. ICANN assigns names and numbers on the basis of requests from users. To date, I have never heard of ICANN refusing a request for a name/number pair or deleting one from its tables (although I suspect its happened). For several years now, various commercial interests have attempted to persuade the government to take a more hands on control of the Internet so that the function of ICANN could be handled in a better way to serve their interests, but private users have raised objections and blocked these efforts. By moving oversight of ICANN from the US to the UN, they may have a better chance, especially if, as Wild Bill speculates, the Muslim voting block in the UN can affect the outcome for their own purposes.

SMSgt Jesse Ohlsson - Thanks Jesse, I still don't care for the UN having anymore influence in anything but your link was helpful.
