Here is a background on Sylvester Stone and Sly and the Family Stone which includes an iteration of his band playing on the Ed Sullivan Show - Dance to the Music.
I grew up listening to a variety of music including Sly and the Family Stone which played on the local Soul Train show.
Their upbeat songs and message of unity was a welcome experience when so many wanted to divide - very reminiscent of today IMHO.
