Some Don’t like to mention the word or talk about Suicide, because it can set off triggers for those who’ve faced those thoughts and those of us who’ve lost brothers and sisters to suicide. But it needs to be discussed and we must understand the “Warning Signs!”

Saturday’s Topic: “What is Suicide and Suicidal Behavior?”
If you or someone you know is exhibiting either, you should seek immediate assistance from a healthcare provider.
The rate of suicide among military troops increased to its highest level in five years, according to a report released Thursday by the Pentagon.
The rate of suicide among active-duty troops was 24.8 per 100,000 people in 2018. In 2017, that figure was 21.9 per 100,000 troops. Five years ago, the suicide rate among troops was 18.5 per 100,000 service members.
The Pentagon attributed the overall spike in the rate to small increases in suicides across all the services. The military’s suicide rate compares with 18.2 people per 100,000 for all Americans ages 17 to 59. The report maintains that, adjusting for age and gender, the military’s rate is roughly the same as American society.
You can’t see what a person is feeling on the inside, so it isn’t always easy to identify when someone is having suicidal thoughts. However, some outward warning signs that a person may be contemplating suicide include:
— talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or alone
— making a will or giving away personal possessions
— searching for a means of doing personal harm, such as buying a gun
— sleeping too much or too little
— eating too little or eating too much, resulting in significant weight gain or loss
— engaging in reckless behaviors, including excessive alcohol or drug consumption
— avoiding social interactions with others
— expressing rage or intentions to seek revenge
— showing signs of extreme anxiousness or agitation
— having dramatic mood swings
— talking about suicide as a way out
It can feel scary, but taking action and getting someone the help they need may help prevent a suicide attempt or death.

Good Morning COL Mikel J. Burroughs!!! My wife and I are going to West Dennis on Cape Cod this weekend and I will not be available to join this well worthwhile session... Thank you for the invitation to this timely topic of Suicide...

Col. how can we not want to talk about 22 veteran suicides every single month in this country. Brave and Honorable men and women who would have given their ALL for this nation and those in the fight with them. Now, losing their lives "At Home" because we don't want to talk about human lives ending every day because veterans don't have enough outlets to tell anybody about the demons haunting their minds. I have personally gone through nearly all of the warning signs and thankfully I found a woman who was willing to see me through, Listen and get my mental health in check. Col. I didn't let her get away! Married no 11 years. I'd love to start a non-profit in my hometown based solely on this topic and making vets better and getting them healed mental health wise. I had seven veterans in my family and all but four are still here. But, I have one who's disconnected from everything and ran off to Alaska, hasn't spoken to family in over 20 years. One living in the streets of Memphis who knows where, and he's been put into and left three veteran facilities. This thing is more serious than most think. Thanks for sharing Col.

Shared to Facebook, Mikel. We HAVE to talk about the number of our Brothers and Sisters we lose each day to suicide if we are ever going to be able to reduce that number.
