I understand that China sees that land as theirs, but I personally don't understand why.

That is a possibility, and probably not a bad one, but when it comes to the ocean, I don't know what the shipping lanes are. That's why I said I didn't understand :). If its for that, or for a defensive parameter, or just for beach parties, I would be interested in learning more of why its so important.

an international court found their claims invalid but they ignored the ruling. Freedom of Navigation ops (FON) is the only way to insure the seas stay free. The Brits, Aussies and Japan also conduct these operations.
