I served in South Korea during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, things that went on in ROK during the 1960-1970s went essentially unreported as actions in Korea were far overshadowed by the news coverage of the Vietnam War, which is as it should have been. However, there were things going on in Korea that many people do not know. While I was in-country (26+ months) there were a reported 212 US KIA, most deaths coming in and/or near the DMZ. This was during a period of time that US and ROK forces were on medium to high alert just about continually. At the location I was, we had more that one infiltration into our "backdoor." Since I spent the first few months in Korea in the S-2 shop I was privy to much more than most. During most of my 26 months, I was on the permanent QRF detail. The QRF was called out quite often for either local (out backdoor) or locations that we had to fly to get to. My belief is that the NKs were not to be trusted, not to be ignored and feared. Of course, I do not have much of an understanding, from boots on the ground point-of-view, of the current conditions along the DMV. Somethings simply do not change and I believe this is one such condition. Therefore, it is my position that the DMZ must be well secured on a permanent basis. The tunnels that were built and continue to be built are another source of fear. Anyone that has been the tunnels will understand how much of a threat they pose.

The bottom line is the Korean War still has never ended which is something a lot of people fail to understand.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Those who control the past... control the future.

The only thing I can say at this point in time is the reduction of troops on that DMZ is a cost saving venture... and the game of warfare has advanced since 1952... we are much better at mass killing on the battlefield with much better weapons systems. One A-10 versus a B-24 Liberator... Ill take the A-10 anytime.... heck an F 86 compared to a OV-10... Id take the OV-10... Even tanks... handheld stingers systems,, javelins... B-52 over a B-17... ONE F-35 versus 10 SU's... One Aircraft battle group v the entire NK navy...plus its air force... A million man army these days don't mean shit like it used to... IMHO of course...

The us only has 25,000 there and the South Koreans have half a million. You know for sure that South Korea has more than 2% of his GDP toward defense

Don't rush to disarm or withdraw. Those on the other side are not your friends
