I've stated here before that the Civil War was unusual because most of the early histories of the Civil War was written by the losers, which is why Grant is portrayed as drunk and Sherman a butcher while Lee was a "Southern Gentleman" that just happened to get his Army slaughtered in two ill conceived invasions of the North.
Yes, the war was about Slavery, which is the only States Right the South was worried about. From the political side, they also feared that entrance of the Western States as non slave states would dilute what was then referred to crudely as the "Nigger Vote", which had nothing to do with African American franchise. If you remember the original Constitution, the compromise was that the Slave states got to count 3/5 ths. of their slave population toward representation in the House, and maybe more importantly, in the Electoral College. So they got credit for an enslaved and disenfranchised population that gave them an political advantage that was slipping away by 1860.
If you get someone that starts on this States Rights, I would just point out that the South had no problems with enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act in States that didn't have Slavery.

The south did a great PR job after losing, never understood why so many Army post are named after confederate generals?????

SSG (Join to see) - Sometimes it was because of the local Senator or Congressman. As an example, the Confederate General Henry Benning actually was from Columbus, Ga. The ones I never understood is naming posts after bad Generals, Braxton Bragg comes to mind.
Still, we study Gunderian and Rommell in the Infantry and Armor schools. I'm not offended by the statue of some General from the Civil War. Ability and bravery don't always have a side.

Anyone who believes the state's rights thing for the Civil war has never studied history, the authors in this piece hit the nail on the head it was about preserving their way of life which was highly dependent on free slave labor.

I was confronted by a guy from Massachusetts (I'm from Georgia) about how he disliked the South because of slavery. My question to him was, "Who owned the ships that brought slaves to America? Most of them were owned by Northerners, and a lot from Massachusetts."
No one had clean hands in that situation. All about money.
