Study the story of the Transcontinental Railroad. It didn't survive more than a couple of years after costing untold fortunes to build. The contractors followed a serpentine route because they were paid by the mile. It was replaced by privately funded and built railways that were economically profitable and constructed to last. NASA was like the Transcontinental Railroad and Musk is operating in the tradition of those who built a better railroad. When will We learn that the government screws up everything it touches.

One of those situations where privatization actually worked.
