Today marks the 71st anniversary of the assault on the Island of Iwo Jima which while ultimately successful was the only battle where USMC casualties of over 26,000 including 6,800 killed were higher than Japanese casualties of 21,000 [vast majority killed]
With 27 Medals of Honor awarded [most posthumously] this operation involved desperate fighting and gallantry from both Marines on the ground and sailors fighting kamikaze and other threats.

LTC Stephen F., This is a picture of me and a lady I met at a restaurant on last year's Veterans Day. She was in the Navy and served on Iwo Jima. She's s 93 now. Has a great sense of humor and is sharp as a tack. It was an honor to get my picture taken with her.

I was fortunate enough to visit Iwo Jima back in 1999. I was a humble experience. Here are a few pictures of the airfield tower, a Marine memorial atop of Mt Suribachi and looking down at invasion beach from Mt Suribachi.

I had a very good friend, now passed, who was a young Marine Captain and landed on the 7th wave. Every anniversary, he telephoned his Gunny and said, "Do you remember where we were on this day? He was my personal hero. RIP COL Russ Paquette.
