Nothing can really beat Edward Gibbon, and his seminal wok: The decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Indeed a seminal work... i’ve got my copies here somewhere.
The problem with Gibbon is that he was working with the knowledge (and, unfortunately, the prejudices) of his time.
It would be fascinating to see a similar work written today with the more recent discoveries taken into account.
Thr challenge is that Rome spanned such a huge area, geographically and temporally, that we may NEVER accurately discover the whole truth.
So much was lost... so much has yet to be recovered.
