SSG Barry Sadler struck a chord in this nation back in the days before the mass protests against the Vietnam War TSgt Joe C.
If this song was released in 1969 it would be a fringe recording at best. However in 1966 patriotism was still high and soldiers were respected.
Kudos to SSG Barry Sadler!

TSgt Joe C., the SFTG instructors for Phase 1 at Camp Mackall made us come to attention and sing it every morning on the days we were in a classroom setting, April-May, 1970!
I paid my respects as I visited the grave of SSG Barry Sadler (November 1, 1940 - November 5, 1989) at the Nashville National Cemetery on 6APR13. Requiescat in pace. SFC George Smith SSgt (Join to see) CSM Charles Hayden
