Posting this because it has a video of the Fitzgerald limping into port. Unfortunately, the title doesn't reflect that. Initial thoughts on my part are that she's still listing pretty heavily, which makes me think that the subsurface damage is greater than so-far reported -- otherwise, they'd correct the list by ejecting the water or counter-ballasting. There's also a good picture gallery of the damage.

Pretty simplistic view of something that is in reality pretty complex. We don't have all the story yet, so it's best to wait until we have more info, imo. Respectfully.

If you look at the damage on Fitz and the merchant, Fitz took a hit from the bow of the merch. Looking at photos of the merch, she has a huge bow dome. I would expect that there is a lot of below waterline damage. You can't counter-ballast on these ships. They weren't designed that way. They are designed to take on a bunch of water and still float (USS Cole). I did notice that the entire bridge level has a decided starboard list. Unfortunately, where all that damage is topside is where the CO's cabin is located.

Nope... every space is dedicated to something (electronics, berthing and engineering). You have to get very creative with flooding. Without getting into classified areas, the ship is designed to take on a LOT of flooding without sinking and still being able to drive through the water and shoot weapons.
