Many time they don't give the reason if its not an obvious case such as rape. A couple of examples that come to mind are that many commanders get relieved for fudging paperwork to pass inspections. (its a UCMJ offense but something instead of pressing charges they just do command relief and a letter of reprimand both career enders for an officer. Another thing could be rudeness, disrespect, cussing and/or put-downs to subordinates which can create a toxic leadership environment. I heard about a couple people being relieved for those reasons.
