If you are looking to see something in the far east that is off the beaten path, I suggest going to see the old city in Sukhothai (สุโขทัย). At one time it was the capital, from 1238-1583, of the Thai Kingdom. It is unique because of the many forms of architecture found there. The architecture includes the Imperial Khmer (Cambodian) style, Imperial Burmese Style, and Pre-Modern Thai style. The site covers 27 sq. miles and one can spend the whole day exploring it.
