Police are supposed to be professionals..therefore they should be held to a higher standard due to their training / knowledge, just as security officers get a lot of training.

And trial lawyers are salivating. How much will mal practice insurance cost either police or municipalities? Look at the cost of insurance for Physicians? America is suit happy and even a frivolous law suit can bankrupt a citizen without insurance. I think this idea sucks.

There clearly is a need for tort reform across the country.
About 20 years ago, Michigan ended the penchant for frivolus suits by leaving the decision with the judge as to whether the suit has merit. If it doesn't the judge can rule it as frivolous which then requires the attorney who filed the suit to pay all court costs and fees for the defendant and their attorney out of pocket. They may also be fined by the court.
Since that time law suits have dropped significantly and by now have leveled off from their high-water mark.

LTC David Brown That status quo clearly sucks too. To be clear we lived under the idea you say sucks for the first 200 years of the republic.
I suggest to you that the problem, and what has changed, is a huge increase in the cost of defending oneself from frivolous litigation.
