Syria shot down Russian military reconnaissance plane, admits Kremlin

You would think that for a reconnaissance aircraft, the pilot and crew would be in contact with ATC, at least the tower controller, and be warned that there was an attack happening before attempting to land. And don’t reconnaissance aircraft have early warning systems to alert them they’re under attack? And to launch countermeasures to try to defend themselves?
Something’s amiss here.
