I think it was intended to send a message. Not just to Syria and Russia either, but to Iran, North Korea, and China as well. If it wasn't intended to send a message, it was intended to hit exactly what it hit. If there's any chance at all that you may end up occupying an airfield, why would you blow up the runway?

Perception is a devious thing. We can't judge if the mission was botched without knowing the mission. We don't know if the mission itself was a good idea without knowing all that the President knew. We don't know nothing about nothing but when has that ever stopped anyone from having an opinion. Those who hate Trump will see it as botched. Those who hate those who hate Trump will see it as a triumph. Que sera sera...

Wise words. I believe the President hinted at the objectives when he said in remarks about the action, "It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.” Hopefully this mission will deter Syrian authorities from further use of chemical weapons.

COL Christensen: I understand the targeting.....but I must admit, I was disappointed when I saw the 1st satellite photos showing the runways still intact.

I was an OPLAN developer for many years and can tell you that when attacking an airfield the actual runway is the lowest priority target. There can be occasions when not the case but first pass targeting isn't going to go after the runway. Way too many high priority targets.
