The Geneva and Hague Conventions were revolutionary when they were developed an ratified SGT John " Mac " McConnell. Of course that was in the days when nation states and empires dominated. Nation states became significantly more dominant after 1871 when Germany and Italy were formed as nations. the breakup of the Ottoman Turkish and Austrian Hungarian Empires ended the age of empires.
Now non-state [radical Muslim al Qaeda, ISIS, etc.] and rogue-states [Iran and North Korea] are the major threats to world stability and peace. by definition non-state-actors and rogue-states are not party to Geneva and Hague Conventions and they have no inclination to adhere to it.
The major powers are still nations so IMHO the Geneva and Hague Conventions still have value.
