Not a waste. The tanks go to the Army, the crew can get out of the Corps and go to the Army (or reclassify), the Marines get benefits in cost savings (perhaps for new equipment like the testing advanced ACV) and the Corps can reduce its logistical tail while enhancing warfighter capabilities. Sounds like a win all the way around.

Tanks complicate the load plan with still limited amphib lift. They're good to have but come at a price. New weapons and tactics fill the void unless it's HIC.

Pity, just pity. How about reclass to other specialties / branches?

Marines were given that option. As well as transfer to other branches. They authorized early retirement for others. Reserve Armor Marines from one company went to the ARNG at the same reserve center

LTC Jason Mackay glad to hear that. The article, they way I understood, states those specialties are out of luck within the Corps. Either transfer to other service or kiss the military goodby. Again, my understanding from what the article states. From the Reservers Armor USMC to NG? That’s plain logic. Gosh, if I was the NG Troop Commander I would tell the USMC to move their rolling stock to my motor pool as well! (Sarcasm)

LTC Jason Mackay that one I missed. But I’m glad folks were given all sorts of options. Lots of talent in need of a new place to call home!

Its sad to see the second Tank Battalion deactivated. That was my 1st unit after I got out of ITR in59.I was in H&S CO. which consisted of the CO &XO,s Tank. Also we had 9 Flame Tanks in the Company. I was 18 and told I was the driver on the CO,s tank. WE had on the job training back then I was scared I learned how to drive the tank. We made a landing in Vieques Puerto Rico I forgot to close the drivers hatch I went down the ramp on the Mike boat hit the water and Thought I was going to drown, the water poured in thru the hatch. I held my Breath and floorboarded the gas pedal and made ir to the beach. About 8 months later they made me go to Ammo Tech. School in Quantico. That was the end of my tanker career. Semper Fi.
