(2) Bush leads a flight of VT-51 TBMs from the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) escorted by F6F Hellcats in the summer of 1944. (3) Bush makes the bombing run over Chi Chi Jima in the VT-51 TBM Avenger in which he was shot down on 2 Sept. 1944.

LTC Joe Anderson - Good question. My guess is that given the severe damage, fire, and possibility his two crewmen were wounded by flak, they simply didn't get out--despite his best efforts to give them a chance to do so before he jumped. . . .

I was amazed to see how profoundly the loss of his teammates still affected him all the years later when he was interviewed about the attack.

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. Oh, I totally understandyou and him. I was meaning he was 60 years or more after their loss when he was being interviewed and he, a former CIA director and President, still thought about them every day and wondered if he did enough for them to evacuate the plain. The pain and sadness he showed was real. I had always thought him too aloof to care about folks. The interview changed my whole opinion of him.

I have never forgotten the guy's that were wounded, or lost their lives in my squad. The problem was that you called for a dustoff, the took the wounded, and the KIA's, and you moved on. Later in life they are all there for you in your memory, and they will always remain sharp as ever. When they come back I get very emotional, and even cry., as when they happened you just did not have the time to mourn for the,.
