It wouldn't hurt to check with some of the firms that hire folks in the trade you want to study and ask them what skills they like to see in an applicant and also what type of education they are looking for. It can also lead to some contacts when you graduate as well.
On the VA educational benefits it used to be that once you achieved your goal the benefits ceased. Not sure if that is still the case. The advise used to be to state your goal as generally and lofty as possible so that if anything went wrong. (e.g. you chose a field you hated or the school wasn't what you thought you could change within your objective without losing benefits.
