Teddy Roosevelt had fought in the Spanish American war as the commander of the Rough Riders TSgt Joe C.. He had seen the valor of the Buffalo soldiers and the prejudice of some towards them - in and out of the military.
Teddy Roosevelt was uniquely qualified as both a war hero and a statesman to speak up for equal opportunity for black Americans and respect for all independent of skin color or other then unchangeable charateristics.

Excellent AV images! Pres. Roosevelt also has been the only president to be awarded the Army's Medal of Honor. Of course, it was posthumous but deserving for his performance storming Havana's defenses up San Juan Hill. He was among the best of the Rough Riders'!

If one reads "The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War" by James Bradley, one would quickly learn Roosevelt's true attitude toward race. He was very biased (by today's standards) toward all non-white races, feeling the other races were incapable of governing themselves, nor ever advancing to the same cultural status as whites.
I found this very sad as I had been an admirer of his until I read this.
