Okay. This can't go on without saying something. We don't (or shouldn't) celebrate heroes but rather we should celebrate acts of heroism. Every "hero" has flaws. Look at the heroes of the Old Testament. Moses denied entry into the promised land because he broke God's gift (the tablets containing the Law) in a fit of rage. Noah became a falling down drunk. David and Solomon fell victim to their passions for women. Then there are the great athletes. Pete Rose. I could go on and on.
Now here's a statue commemorating symbolizing the prowess of the Texas Rangers, one of the most celebrated law enforcement organizations. This statue representing one of their most famous stories; One Riot, One Ranger.
Please step back and take a deep breath. Now consider. Are we going to destroy our history for the sake of political correctness? No, this statue doesn't celebrate racism any more than the one of Kate Smith that they removed from the Philadelphia Flyer's stadium. I'll climb even further out onto a limb. Robert E. Lee served the United States well for many years. And he served it well when he ordered his army to accept the surrender at Appomatox instead of reorganizing into guerrilla bands, thus saving the United States from an interminable war of terrorism. Why can't we celebrate the good in light of the bad. It's really not a bad lesson to teach our children, is it? Hell, we even erected a statue of Benedict Arnold's leg at West Point to celebrate that which he gave in service to his nation before he became a traitor...
At this rate, we will have sanitized history until we have no history but, of course, that will facilitate the battle of those who want to replace America with membership in a new global society...
