This article is correct. Many reasons can easily rule out a candidate for a civilian job position. The way around this is to be acutely aware of these reasons and ensure you do not violate them. As a copy editor, I see documents and resumes all of the time that are not well written or well proofed for errors.

This is a solid article with some good advice for those transitioning. The biggest point, in my opinion, is that most don't know what they want to do when they leave the service. Even better, the author points out some ways to attack this problem.

I'd like to see the services do more for people in this regard though. It makes sense that most service members don't know what they want to do, they've (for the most part) had exactly one job since leaving high school or college. Additionally, that job did not provide a lot of exposure to other career paths. There are a number of groups that will help service members figure out what they want to do (American Corporate Partnerships and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce helped me), but the transition program I attended did not do much to link me with these organizations. Perhaps the various services should have a program that links with local industries to provide service members with insight into various career paths.

As someone who's been a hiring manager in large and small companies alike I agree this article gives solid advice.
