June 18, 1969, my unit, B Company 1st Battalion, 61st Infantry was engaged with an NVA Sapper Regiment a click from the border of Laos, 20 clicks south of Khe Shan. We were part of a task forces consisting of a platoon of M48 Tanks, a Cav Troop and a Engineer paltoon and a Duster section.. We were attacked at exactly 0300 hrs which the fighting was fierce and causulaites heavy. Spooky flew over and illuminated the battlefield and circled our NDV with mini-gun fire. It drove the remaining enemy away. No doubt in my mind they helped us from getting wiped out. We wewre again attacked the next night and the talon was again on station. The final battle was on the 4th night which after the smoke cleared my company lost 35 troops which 100 enemy killed inside our perimeter. I am not sure what 1st battalion 77th Armor or 4th 12th Cav, Dusters and the 9th Eng Company lost but we put the NVA back on the otherside with AKA Puff the Majic Dragon's help. By the way, Spooky was a AC-47.

SCPO (Join to see) - I left out a lot of details because the subject was about the Vietnam Gunships. Spooky was the only the only close fire support on the Vietnam side of the Hồ Chí Minh trail. The 5th Infantry Division's First Brigade was the only army unit commanded by the 3rd Marines. The 1st of the 9th Marines choppered in on the 3rd day of the battle and we fought side by side on the 21st and 22nd of June. Other Marine units and the 5th Mech had battles all along the train during the same time frame.
