I think what we have here is an exponential growth of the need for testing continuing to outrun a steady ramp up of supply. According to the administration briefing today, over 1 million people have been tested now. But clearly the number of cases means checking everyone each patient had contact with is an ever-growing problem.

The staggering statistic to me is that we are mostly testing people that are "symptomatic". They have high fevers, coughs, perhaps tightness in the chest etc. (with some exception) and they may be in higher risk groups. Of the people we test, only about 15% come back positive. 85% or our tests come back negative for the virus which means we are burning up a lot of tests for no reason. I am not sure if our criteria/screening is good enough either.
