SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth - you can submit civilian records for medical diagnoses and treatment as long as it was during a creditable period of military service.

LTC Stephen F. - I have a funny story on civilian records, it was in Hungary with a Hungarian civilian doctor when I was on leave that was brought up that my back was broken. Good think my wife, and favorite translator, was with me. I still have the CD and records (in Hungarian) just in case.

MAJ Raúl Rovira - It would be great if you could provide a copy to the VA. It would be interesting to see their response :-)

MAJ Raúl Rovira: I am 100% service-connected. I would just sit down with your Claims Officer, and explain-in detail-your symptoms. That Should get you your desired effect.
With My Compassion for you, Sir-
Margaret

In general the four pillars cited in the article are correct MAJ Raúl Rovira.
However in addition to a Military-Service connection,
1. if during the course of treatment by the VA Medical System complications develop other problems those problems can potentially be submitted as claims.
2. you can submit civilian records for medical diagnoses and treatment as long as it was during a creditable period of military service.
Pillar 1: Eligibility as a veteran
Pillar 2: Service connection
Pillar 3: Impairment rating
Pillar 4: Effective date
Personal example. I have six service-connected disabilities rated at between 60% and 10% by the VA and a number which are rated at 0% because they don't affect enough of my body to be counted yet.
Other diseases have occurred since I started being treated by the VA 3 years ago. The autoimmune disease psoriasis began to affect me 18 months ago and is spreading even though it is being treated by strong steroids.
Thanks for mentioning me TSgt Joe C..
