Nice, but other than weigh less what can it do that my M1 Rifle or M1A Rifle (M14 type rifle) is not able to do? Please note that the DSMR in this case does not use a telescopic optic. At least that is what I think the article stated.

The DMSR is set to use a verible power 1-6 optic

Why this rifle?

A: there are not enough EBRs to equip every infranty, and other and members with the DSMR

B: right not units fall in on the EBR in country they do not get to train on them or employment at home station, buying and issuing this rifle corrects that failure we have been yelling about for years

C: the EBR based off of old M14s was a quick fix to an operational need. And it was a marginal fix at best. The rifles are in marginal condition when converted and only have a few kit bolt ons to improve what was a used mostly worn rifle.

SGM Erik Marquez - "The rifles are in marginal condition when converted and only have a few kit bolt ons to improve what was a used mostly worn rifle." Marginal and worn condition of the rifle and that is part of the crux of the issue in that regard, and not really fully understood.
But that part actually raises some questions since those weapons (the EBR) were supposed to be based on depot rebuilds of the M14. And I know from personal experience that not that many were pulled out of stocks to support Desert Shield/Desert Storm. And those were in packaging as if they were brand new weapons.
So what you are stating (which is probably pretty accurate) that our depot and arsenal repair system is no longer worth the money spent on them and that they are a failure. But then again with so much of that type of stuff being contracted out, were did the money go?
Hopefully this will solve the problem, but without basic marksmanship training from the beginning, newer items will not fix the problem.

Read your last paragraph again that is one of the primary reasons for this program. How can you possibly Train a weapon system you don’t see it till you get in country? This new acquisition directly addresses that concern.

as to the EBR condition, I never saw a near new or newish looking EBR in 3 deployments. I saw Old rifles that had been gone through. So no, not a shot out barrel, not a bent rod, and all new furniture.. But these are just an old design battle rifle, precision at longer distances was not a design feature when new.
Yes I know in great condition, well cared for and in the right hands folks shoot them at 800 meters with precision.. but thats an exception, not a rule.

Look at any weapon back from depot M249, M9, M4, are they serviceable?? YES
Are they in like new or better condition NO
And even if the were, that makes them only as accurate and reliable as the design intended... the M14 was not directly designed as a long range rifle.

I'll take one of those EBR-14s if they don't want them.
